Steven Sidley

Professor of Practice at University of Johannesburg

Sidley is Professor of Practice at JBS, University of Johannesburg fields of artificial intelligence and in crypto technologies and economies.

He an award-winning and multi-shortlisted author of seven books (both fiction and non-fiction). He has written two books on crypto – Beyond Bitcoin: Decentralised Finance and the End of Banks in 2021 and It’s Mine: How the Blockchain is Redefining Ownership, which was published in 2023.

Professor Steven Sidley was educated at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of California, Los Angeles. During his 17 years in LA he was one of the first wave of videogame developers and subsequently built and sold one of California’s premier computer animation companies.

He returned to SA where co-found multiple technology companies, including Prism Payment Technologies which was publicly listed on the JSE, and Agilitude, which was sold to PwC.

He has held worldwide Group Chief Technology Officer positions at Anglo American plc and Altech/Altron and was CTO on one of SA’s first blockchain projects, Project UBU.

Sidley is a widely published columnist (weekly columns for Daily Maverick, Currency and Daily Friend) and is currently a partner at Bridge Capital, a corporate advisory.
